SWAT Lives On: Exiles Spinoff Announced!

The action-drama series S.W.A.T., after a tumultuous journey of cancellations and renewals, has found a new life with a surprise spinoff. Initially airing on CBS for six seasons starting in 2017, the show faced cancellation multiple times. It was revived for a seventh and final season, only for CBS to reverse that decision and greenlight an eighth season. However, the network canceled the show again in March 2025.

Just two days after its series finale aired, Sony Pictures Television announced S.W.A.T. Exiles, a new series that will continue the franchise. This spinoff centers on Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, portrayed by Shemar Moore, who is pulled from retirement to lead an experimental SWAT unit. The new team will consist of untested, young recruits, presenting Hondo with the challenge of bridging generational divides and transforming outsiders into a cohesive unit.

Shemar Moore has confirmed his return, expressing enthusiasm for the continuation of the franchise. However, other cast members from the final season, including Jay Harrington, David Lim, Patrick St. Esprit, Anna Enger Ritch, Annie Ilonzeh, and Niko Pepaj, have not been confirmed to reprise their roles. Harrington and Lim are expected to appear in one episode each, while Ritch, Ilonzeh, and Pepaj have not yet commented on the spinoff.

Moore’s statement highlighted the eight seasons of his involvement, thanking fans for their support and emphasizing the show's resilience. He stated, "We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide." The future of the S.W.A.T. universe now rests on the shoulders of this new iteration, aiming to maintain the franchise's thrill, action, and drama.
