Supreme Court Greenlights Jagannath Film Release

The Supreme Court has paved the way for the animated film Mahaprabhu Jagannath to be released, rejecting appeals from the Odisha government and the Puri Jagannath temple administration to halt its screening. The court expressed its disapproval of the petitions attempting to block the film, emphasizing its support for artistic expression.

Justices B V Nagarathna and R Mahadevan highlighted animation's potential to aid children's comprehension, stating that art and creativity should not be suppressed. The film, having received certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), is permitted for nationwide release from July 28. The court dismissed concerns that an animated depiction might offend religious sentiments or diminish devotion, asserting that faith is a personal matter.

The Orissa High Court had previously stayed the film's release, citing potential hurt to religious sentiments and public order, particularly during the Jagannath Yatra. The Supreme Court acknowledged this delay was primarily to ensure the peaceful conclusion of the Rath Yatra, which concluded on July 27. The makers noted that a similar animated series had garnered over 100 crore views on YouTube without objection, further supporting their case.
