In response to a perceived pullback in DEI efforts within the entertainment industry, The Necessary Foundation has launched to bolster LGBTQ+ filmmakers. Alan Cumming, Bowen Yang, Lena Waithe, and Adam Goldman are founding board members, with Goldman also serving as executive director. The non-profit is dedicated to providing essential financing and opportunities to help queer artists establish careers in film and television.
The foundation will annually award $20,000 grants to early-career LGBTQ+ filmmakers for pilot or short film projects. These grants will be accompanied by mentorship from industry professionals. Advisory board members include Lilly Wachowski and Bruce Cohen. The organization will also sponsor festival submission fees and host screenings in New York and Los Angeles, aiming to counteract a reported decrease in LGBTQ+ characters on screen.
