Director Defends Sunny Deol's Controversial Muslim Role

Director Rajkumar Santoshi has disclosed that casting Sunny Deol as an Indian Muslim hero in 'Batwara 1947' was viewed as a risky proposition by the film industry. Santoshi recalled significant reluctance to back a film focused on Pakistan with a Muslim protagonist, especially with Deol, known for patriotic, action-oriented roles. The filmmaker felt Deol's portrayal of Sikandar Mirza, an Indian Muslim caught in partition turmoil, was a compelling contradiction that needed to be explored.

Santoshi explained that around 15 years ago, the industry favored mainstream formulas and feared audiences would not accept Deol in such a departure from his usual characters. He noted that even before current religious polarization, stories involving Pakistan and Muslim characters were met with apprehension. Santoshi praised Deol for embracing the role, including dialogues from the Quran, a move most stars would avoid due to fear, stating he salutes Deol's conviction.

The film's message of brotherhood and coexistence was further amplified by inviting religious leaders to screenings, who commended its emphasis on respecting faiths. Santoshi confirmed that the source material's author, Asghar Wajahat, was involved early in the screenplay development and was pleased with the adaptation. Santoshi's primary concern remains the reception among Indian audiences, finding satisfaction in viewer praise despite initial box office disappointment.
