Pirate Gold Unearthed: Nassau's Golden Age Revealed
4 Sep
Summary
- Six shipwrecks discovered, three from the golden age of piracy.
- Archaeologists found cannons, pipes, and a charred hull.
- One wreck may be Henry Avery's flagship, the Fancy.

A recent underwater expedition in the Bahamas has uncovered six shipwrecks, with three dating to the golden age of piracy between 1690 and 1725. Maritime archaeologist Sean Kingsley led the research team, which identified artifacts like iron cannons, musket balls, and clay tobacco pipes bearing English royal crests.
Among the discoveries is a wooden hull burned down to the waterline, a tactic often used by pirates to destroy evidence. Dr. Kingsley speculates this could be the Fancy, the flagship of the infamous pirate Henry Avery, known for a massive heist in 1695. The find was made near New Providence Island, a historical pirate sanctuary.
The expedition combined local lore with advanced technology to map the sunken history of Nassau. Dr. Kingsley noted that while Hollywood portrays pirates glamorously, the reality was often brutal, with short, dangerous lives. The wrecks offer a gritty glimpse into this historical period, contrasting with romanticized depictions.
