Violin maestro: Seven notes shape all music
15 Mar
Summary
- Every musical milestone traces back to three key influences.
- Viral shortcuts won't create sustainable artists, training is vital.
- The universality of seven musical notes transcends genres.

Violinist Sunita Bhuyan shared insights into her musical journey, highlighting the profound influence of her mother, Minoti Khaund, maestro Bhupen Hazarika, and the fundamental seven classical notes. Bhuyan described Hazarika's music as deeply intertwined with humanity and social change, a significant inspiration for those growing up in Assam.
Her mother, Assam's pioneering violinist and a Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee, served as Bhuyan's first guru. She introduced the violin to the state over six decades ago and instilled in Bhuyan the understanding that all music is contained within the seven basic notes.
Bhuyan drew a parallel between the universality of these notes and the importance of inclusion. She noted that whether in folk, rock, jazz, or film music, the same seven notes form the basis. She cautioned young artists against relying on viral trends for fame, advocating instead for dedicated training and developing deep expertise to become a truly sustainable artist.
