In a significant move, the experimental metal duo Sun O))) has signed with the venerated Seattle-based label Sub Pop and shared their first new music for the imprint. The band has released a trio of tracks—"Eternity's Pillars," "Raise the Chalice," and "Reverential"—which are now available on streaming services and as a limited-edition 12" vinyl single.
"Eternity's Pillars" is named after a 1980s television program created and hosted by jazz visionary and spiritual guru Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, reflecting Sun O)))'s incessant belief in music's capacity to attain spiritual transcendence. "Raise the Chalice" pays homage to a rallying cry often uttered by Northwest legend Ron Guardipee throughout the mid-1990s, while "Reverential" equally respects and sends loud praise to those who came before with the heaviest burdens, using music and art as the materials of an antiphon.
Now a duo of founding members Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson, Sun O))) last released new studio albums Life Metal and Pyroclasts in 2019, and also documented their BBC Radio 6 session from that same year in the 2021 live album Metta, Benevolence. With this latest offering, the band continues to push the boundaries of their signature experimental sound, captivating listeners with their transcendent sonic explorations.
