Summer Stage: Stars, Spooks & Musicals Abound

New York's summer theater scene is vibrant, offering a diverse range of performances. "Celebrity Autobiography," a unique show where stars read celebrity memoirs, is playing on Broadway until August 16. For musical enthusiasts, hit shows such as "The Lost Boys" and "Schmigadoon!" are booking performances into the following year.

Classic revivals like "The Rocky Horror Show" and "Cats: The Jellicle Ball" are also continuing their runs. A new play inspired by the "Paranormal Activity" franchise will debut on Broadway in August, promising a spooky end to the summer season. Earlier in the summer, the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, hosted the premiere of "Black Swan," a musical adaptation of the 2010 film, concluding its run on July 12.

Off-Broadway, "Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Parody Musical," a satire of a popular TV show, runs through September 7. Additionally, several free outdoor productions are available. The Public Theater presents "Romeo and Juliet" through June 28 and "The Winter's Tale" from July 25 to August 23 at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. The Classical Theater of Harlem is staging "Othello" from July 2 to July 26.

For those willing to venture outside the city, Hudson Valley Shakespeare in Garrison, N.Y., opens its season with "As You Like It" through September 18. Further upstate, Hutton Brickyards in Kingston, N.Y., will host The Festival from August 14-16, a three-day outdoor event featuring performances by Audra McDonald and Christopher Jackson.
