The 53rd Student Academy Awards, held on Monday at the TIFF Lightbox during the Toronto International Film Festival, saw a strong performance from international institutions, which collectively earned nine of the twelve available medals. Despite this dominance, emerging filmmakers from Duke University and New York University claimed two of the four gold medals, with the University of Southern California securing a bronze. France notably achieved gold and bronze in the animation category. The 12 recipients were selected from a competitive pool of 2,972 entries submitted by 894 colleges and universities worldwide. This recognition places them among distinguished alumni such as Patricia Cardoso and Spike Lee, and makes them eligible for consideration in the 99th Academy Awards' short film categories.
