Steel Man Statue Faces Move After 52 Years
2 Mar
Summary
- A 52-year-old statue honoring steelworkers may be moved.
- The statue was originally cast at Goodwin Steel Castings foundry.
- Plans involve relocating it to the foundry where it was made.

A statue dedicated to steelworkers, standing for 52 years, is planned for relocation. The monument, known as 'Steel Man', was erected in 1974. It is currently situated outside the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent.
Plans submitted to Stoke-on-Trent City Council propose moving the statue to the Goodwin Steel Castings foundry. This is the very location where the life-sized figure, created by artist Colin Melbourne, was originally cast. The foundry is located on the corner of Leek Road and Ivy House Road.
The statue embodies local craftsmanship and heritage, serving as a testament to the skill and industrial pride of Stoke-on-Trent. The city council has agreed to loan the monument to Goodwin PLC, ensuring it remains visible to the public from the road.
This relocation comes as plans are underway to install a new statue celebrating women in the ceramics industry at the Steel Man's current site.
