Musician and songwriter Sting has been revealed as the narrator for "Nino - A Film About Nino Rota," a new documentary chronicling the life and work of the celebrated composer. The film is set to make its global debut on September 11th during the 83rd Venice Film Festival, featured in the Open section. This cinematic portrait delves into Rota's prolific career, which spanned over 150 film scores.
Rota's compositions are closely associated with renowned directors such as Luchino Visconti and Federico Fellini, contributing music to iconic films like "La Dolce Vita" and "8½." His greatest commercial success came with Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather," for which he, along with "The Godfather Part II," earned him an Academy Award, making him the first Italian composer to achieve this honor.
The documentary combines archival footage and photographs with insights from figures like Park Chan-wook and Alexandre Desplat. It also features Caterina D'Amico, who shares memories of Rota's close friendship with her mother. Rota, who directed a conservatory in Bari for nearly three decades, chose to live in Southern Italy, finding a connection there.
Despite facing criticism for his traditional musical style in an avant-garde era, the film aims to re-establish Rota's place among significant 20th-century composers. "Nino" is slated for release in Italian theaters later this year, distributed by Be Water Film and Adler Entertainment, with production support from regional film funds.
