A legendary Heuer Monaco Reference 1133B, famously worn by Steve McQueen in the 1969 film 'Le Mans,' will be a highlight of Sotheby's Important Watches auction in New York on June 15. This highly sought-after timepiece, appearing at auction for the first time, is estimated to achieve between $500,000 and $1 million.
This particular Monaco is one of seven used during the filming of 'Le Mans.' It was acquired by the film's property master, Don Nunley, who stated it spent the most time on McQueen's wrist. Nunley is now offering the last of his acquired watches from the production.
Beyond its Hollywood provenance, the Monaco is a significant watch in horological history. Launched in 1969, it was among the first automatic chronographs, distinguished by its square case, blue dial, and left-sided crown. The auction also features other notable watches, including a Rolex Submariner previously owned by McQueen, a Patek Philippe formerly owned by President George W. Bush, and pieces linked to Jack Nicklaus and Reggie Jackson.
