7 Nov
Summary
- Stephen King's 'Carrie' originated from a janitor's shower room memory.
- King worked odd jobs, including laundry and janitorial, while struggling.
- A paperback deal for 'Carrie' provided financial security for King.
Stephen King's journey to becoming a celebrated horror author began with humble beginnings and difficult jobs. While working as a janitor at Brunswick High School, a memory of cleaning the girls' shower room stayed with him.
Years later, during a period of financial struggle and employment at an industrial laundry, King revisited this memory. It inspired the opening sequence for his first published novel, 'Carrie'.
King attended the University of Maine, graduating in 1970 with an English degree. He married Tabitha in 1971, and the couple relied on his laundry wages and her student loan while he pursued writing and sold short stories.
In 1972, King began developing the idea for 'Carrie', drawing directly from his locker room experience. Though he initially discarded the pages, his wife encouraged him to continue.
The manuscript was accepted by Doubleday in 1973, with a $2,500 advance. The subsequent $400,000 sale of paperback rights provided the financial stability for King to leave teaching and focus solely on his writing career.
