Colbert's next act: Co-writing Lord of the Rings film

Stephen Colbert is transitioning from his late-night talk show to a new role co-writing a film within the 'Lord of the Rings' franchise. This ambitious project, which has been in development for six years, represents a significant shift for the comedian and self-proclaimed superfan.

Colbert revealed his involvement after his show's announced cancellation, expressing his deep connection to J.R.R. Tolkien's work. He plans to focus on specific, less-developed chapters from 'The Fellowship of the Ring,' with the initial film project centered on 'The Fog on the Barrow-downs.'

Addressing potential criticism from some fans, Colbert stated his intention is to prioritize dramatic storytelling over mere fandom. He highlighted his collaboration with experienced 'Lord of the Rings' writer Philippa Boyens, ensuring a craft-focused approach to the beloved fantasy world.
