Star Trek's 60th: Bendis & Gerrold Write New Comics!

Star Trek marks its 60th anniversary with a special 68-page comic anthology, scheduled for release on September 2. This celebratory issue includes contributions from notable writers, including the comic debut of Brian Michael Bendis and a new story from David Gerrold, who wrote for The Original Series and created the Tribbles. The anthology will feature tales inspired by the original Star Trek series, Star Trek: The Animated Series, and contemporary shows such as Picard, Lower Decks, and Starfleet Academy. It will also offer a preview of IDW's upcoming flagship Star Trek comic title, launching in 2026. Bendis's contribution centers on Sulu, inspired by his real-life encounter with George Takei. Gerrold's story focuses on the character Harry Mudd, reflecting on the enduring themes of friendship within the Star Trek universe. Other featured creators include Mike McMahan, Ryan North, Derek Charm, David Walker, and the Escorza Brothers, contributing stories across various Star Trek eras and characters. The issue also includes a one-pager by Chris Fenoglio and a prelude to IDW's relaunch of Star Trek comics, penned by Christopher Cantwell, which sets the stage for the franchise's future direction. The history of Star Trek comics dates back to 1967, with various publishers including Gold Key, Marvel, and DC releasing titles before IDW took over the license approximately two decades ago. IDW's current flagship comic, Star Trek: The Last Starship, has received positive reviews.
