Filmmaker's Risky Script Change Led to Success

Director Stanley Tong shared his transformative career path at the Red Sea Film Festival, recounting his shift from dangerous stunt work to a pivotal directing role. After sustaining numerous injuries as a stuntman, Tong transitioned into various production roles, learning filmmaking from the ground up. This deep understanding enabled him to later take on the challenge of directing Jackie Chan in 'Police Story 3: Supercop.'

Tong admitted initial fear when tasked with directing 'Supercop,' especially with the constraint of not using Jackie Chan's established stunt team. He identified critical issues with the original script, which involved problematic gun sequences in Hong Kong. Recognizing the need for a fresh approach, Tong bravely proposed a radical script overhaul to his superiors.

His revised vision relocated the action to a setting permitting more extensive stunts and weaponry, and importantly, positioned Michelle Yeoh as a true co-lead. This strategic pivot not only addressed logistical and legal challenges but also elevated the film's narrative and action. 'Police Story 3: Supercop' achieved critical acclaim, securing Jackie Chan his first Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor and significantly enhancing his global reach.
