Bristol Dockyards Rebrand Sparks Controversy
17 Jul
Summary
- Historic SS Great Britain site rebranded to Bristol Dockyards.
- New focus includes inclusive stories alongside engineering.
- Visitor numbers dropped 37.5% since the pandemic's start.

Brunel's SS Great Britain, a prominent Bristol landmark, has undergone a significant makeover and a controversial rebrand. The site is now known as Bristol Dockyards, a name chosen to make the attraction sound "cooler" and appeal to a broader audience. This change coincides with the opening of a revitalized museum.
Detractors have voiced concerns that the rebranding diminishes Isambard Kingdom Brunel's legacy and engineering achievements. Accusations of "wokery" also arose due to the reimagined attraction's inclusion of personal and "inclusive" migration stories. The chief executive of Bristol Dockyards and the SS Great Britain Trust stated that the ship remains the centerpiece but emphasized the need to present a broader narrative, especially as visitor numbers had fallen by 37.5% since the pandemic.
The refurbishment, costing approximately £1.6 million, was funded by a charitable trust and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The new SS Great Britain Experience now encompasses the revitalized museum, the ship itself, and the Great Western dry dock. The "Being Brunel Museum" and the Brunel Institute, a maritime archive, remain integral parts of the attraction, ensuring that Brunel's life and achievements are still well-catered for.
The new museum offers an engaging introduction to the SS Great Britain, providing context for its construction and voyages. It highlights human stories from its 41 years of active service, including tales of passengers, crew members, and workers. The displays also touch upon the ship's role in the British Empire, its transport of soldiers, and its voyages carrying settlers to Australia, as well as its connections to cricket history.
Despite the debate surrounding the new name, the SS Great Britain Experience has been enhanced by the makeover. The new museum adds layers of relatable stories to the ship's history, and the overall presentation is considered balanced, adding value without detracting from Brunel's narrative. The approach embraces a contemporary lens for heritage, focusing on ideas and innovation, reflecting Brunel's own spirit.
