Sridevi & NTR: A 40-Year Age Gap Romance
25 Jul
Summary
- Sridevi, 16, starred opposite NTR, 56, in 'Vetagadu'.
- She previously played NTR's granddaughter as a child.
- The film's unconventional pairing was a box office success.

Sridevi's remarkable career spanned from a child artiste to a celebrated Indian superstar, marked by significant film choices. One such decision was her pairing with veteran Telugu actor N. T. Rama Rao (NTR) in the 1979 hit film 'Vetagadu'. At the time of 'Vetagadu's release, Sridevi was a mere 16 years old, while NTR was 56, presenting a nearly 40-year age disparity.
This pairing was particularly discussed as Sridevi had previously acted with NTR as a child. In the 1972 Telugu film 'Badi Panthulu', she played the granddaughter of NTR's character. Years later, following her successful transition to leading roles, epitomized by 'Padaharella Vayasu' in 1978, Sridevi reunited with NTR in 'Vetagadu' as his romantic interest.
Despite the age difference, 'Vetagadu' did not acknowledge it within its narrative, presenting them as a conventional couple. This artistic choice resonated with audiences, leading to box office success. The duo subsequently appeared in more films together.
NTR passed away in 1996. Sridevi continued to achieve monumental success, becoming recognized as India's first female superstar with acclaimed roles across multiple film industries. She passed away on February 24, 2018, in Dubai due to accidental drowning.
