Concert Tickets: Spotify's Fan-First Plan
19 Jun
Summary
- Spotify now reserves concert tickets for select "superfans."
- This new system aims to reward active fan engagement.
- Ticket sales are conducted through Ticketmaster for Live Nation events.

Spotify has introduced "Reserved by Spotify," a new initiative designed to address challenges in the concert ticketing market. This system aims to reserve tickets for "superfans" of select artists prior to general tour sales. Eligibility requires a Spotify Premium subscription and being over 18 years old. Spotify selects these superfans based on active engagement, with streaming and sharing being contributing factors. This move is intended to reward dedicated fans and provide them with better access to live events.
Eligible superfans will receive direct notifications about available ticket offers within the Spotify app. These offers will also be visible on artist profile pages and the search function. Once an offer is received, users can view available tour dates and their specific ticket sales window, which typically lasts around a day. Ticket transactions will be processed through Ticketmaster, and the feature is currently limited to concerts promoted by Live Nation.
The ticketing industry has faced criticism for high prices and bot-driven resale markets, with Live Nation and its subsidiary Ticketmaster often cited as central figures. Notably, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Live Nation in 2024, alleging monopolistic practices that led to increased ticket costs. A jury ruled against Live Nation, concluding it operated as a monopoly, with potential remedies to be decided by the judge.
Currently, "Reserved by Spotify" is available only in the United States, though expansion to other markets is planned. The music streaming service's first partner for this feature is the artist Role Model, with superfan ticket booking for his fall tour commencing on June 23. This pilot program will assess the effectiveness of Spotify's approach in potentially improving the concert ticketing experience.
