Clocktower Chimes Return After Decade of Silence

Summary

  • The Clocktower's chimes rang out for the first time in over a decade.
  • A new chime system costing $19,300 was installed by park employees.
  • The Clocktower was originally part of a 1902 railroad depot.

The historic Clocktower in Spokane's Riverfront Park has regained its voice after more than a decade of silence. On Saturday, July 4th, hundreds of residents gathered to witness the return of the chimes, an event coinciding with the nation's 250th anniversary.

Mayor Lisa Brown emphasized the importance of appreciating the country's ideals and moving them forward. Following her speech, the 30-second chime rang out at noon, met with enthusiastic applause. The decision to restore the chimes gained momentum months ago when Brown explored the tower and envisioned their return.

Jonathan Moog, director of Riverfront Park, stated the new digital chime system cost approximately $19,300, with installation handled by park employees. Funding originated from remaining assets of the Spokane World Expo's 50th anniversary fund, managed by the Innovia Foundation.

The Clocktower's chimes were last heard in 2015. Originally part of the Great Northern Railroad depot, construction of the 155-foot tower was completed in 1902. The depot was later demolished, but the Clocktower remained standing, a testament to its history.

During the 1970s, the railyard on Havermale Island was dismantled, making way for Riverfront Park. A 48-bell carillon was donated by Betty Castle in memory of her husband, George, before the 1974 World Expo. Some family members of the Castles attended the recent event.

The Clocktower is now programmed to chime every hour from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with a longer 30-second ring at noon. The new system boasts 7,900 prerecorded songs, including hymns, with the capability to add more music and even connect a keyboard.
