Spielberg's Bond Rejection Woes Revealed
11 Jun
Summary
- Steven Spielberg repeatedly offered to direct Bond films.
- Producer Cubby Broccoli rejected Spielberg's offers multiple times.
- Indiana Jones franchise emerged from Bond rejection talks.

Legendary director Steven Spielberg expressed his 'regrets' over being repeatedly turned down for the opportunity to direct a James Bond film. He shared in a podcast interview that shortly after the success of 'Jaws,' he approached producer Albert "Cubby" Broccoli, volunteering his directorial services for the franchise. Broccoli consistently declined Spielberg's requests, never explaining the reasons behind the rejections.
Following the release of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' Spielberg attempted another approach, offering Broccoli permission to use the film's iconic five-note musical sequence in exchange for directing a Bond movie. Broccoli accepted the music but again refused the directorial role. These persistent rejections, however, indirectly led to Spielberg's involvement in the Indiana Jones franchise after a conversation with George Lucas.
Spielberg also mentioned turning down the chance to direct the first Harry Potter film to spend time with his young children, a decision he does not regret. Meanwhile, the future of the James Bond franchise is shifting, with Amazon MGM Studios taking creative control and Steven Knight and Denis Villeneuve set to helm the next installment.
