Spider-Man Shatters Records in China Debut

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in China on Wednesday to immense success, achieving an opening day gross exceeding $16.5 million by midday and projecting a full first-day total of $37.4 million. Box-office trackers forecast a potential final gross of over $255 million, which would position it as Hollywood's highest-grossing film in China since 2019's Avengers: Endgame. The film's strong presales of $18.6 million also marked a summer record for imported films.

This resurgence in China's market for U.S. superhero movies follows a challenging period. Marvel titles faced regulatory blocks from mid-2019 to early 2023, with subsequent films experiencing significantly lower earnings. Spider-Man, however, has historically held a unique appeal. Sony and Marvel strategically timed the China release two days ahead of North America and provided an exclusive IMAX launch, coupled with promotional activities including star Tom Holland's visit to Shanghai.
