Sophia Bush maintains that her friendships with One Tree Hill costars Hilarie Burton and Bethany Joy Lenz are some of the longest relationships of her life. While Bush and Burton have consistently maintained a strong connection, even co-hosting a podcast from 2021 to 2024, her relationship with Lenz presented more challenges. Bush detailed in her memoir, "And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes From a Life in Progress," that Lenz's decade-long involvement with what was later confirmed to be a cult significantly impacted their friendship.

Bush explained that their differing worldviews during those years often created friction. She expressed concern over Lenz's group using religion as a weapon, stating she struggled to understand her friend's beliefs. However, after Lenz left the group in 2012, their relationship began to heal, allowing them to discuss their differences and rebuild their bond, even with occasional breaks.
