Sony's Marvel Future: Animation Over Live-Action?

Sony Pictures appears to be re-evaluating its strategy for live-action Marvel spin-offs. Following disappointing box office results for films such as Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter, the studio is now leaning heavily into animation. While the Tom Hardy-led Venom trilogy achieved some success, other live-action attempts have struggled, leading to a more cautious approach for future projects.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding live-action endeavors, the animated Spider-Verse franchise is confirmed to be expanding. The next installment, 'Beyond the Spider-Verse,' is scheduled for release in 2027 and is expected to serve as a tentative conclusion to the trilogy. Furthermore, rumors suggest potential spin-off series focusing on characters like Spider-Punk and Spider-Gwen are also in development.

The future of Tom Holland's Spider-Man in live-action remains unclear, with Sony's chairman expressing uncertainty about his return for future sequels. The studio does, however, have other non-Marvel film releases planned, including Jumanji: Open World in 2026.
