Sony's New Lawsuit Targets AI Music Generator Udio
21 Jul
Summary
- Sony Music Entertainment sues Udio for infringing over 30,000 songs.
- The lawsuit claims Udio copied and ingested songs into its generative AI models.
- Sony seeks to block infringement and $150,000 per work.

Sony Music Entertainment has initiated a new lawsuit against the AI music generator Udio. The core accusation is the infringement of copyright for more than 30,000 songs, a list that Sony states represents only a fraction of their works allegedly misused by Udio. This new legal action comes after a previous lawsuit in 2024 against Udio and Suno.
Sony claims to have identified additional infringing songs using audio fingerprinting after gaining access to Udio's training data through discovery. A judge had previously limited the scope of the initial lawsuit to 333 works. Sony's current lawsuit focuses on the newly identified over 30,000 songs and indicates potential for further expansion.
The company alleges that Udio has admitted to constructing its AI models by processing a vast amount of sound recordings, including those from YouTube. While UMG and Warner Music Group have settled with Udio and are now collaborating, Sony is pursuing legal recourse. Sony is requesting injunctive relief to prevent further infringement and monetary damages of up to $150,000 per infringed work.
