In the lead-up to the Tokyo International Film Festival, Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP) has revealed ambitious plans to expand its live-action adaptation of anime and manga properties. SPIP's executive VP, Shebnem Askin, told attendees at the TIFFCOM market that the studio is actively seeking new anime projects to adapt for global audiences.
This announcement comes as SPIP continues to find success with local-language productions, with Askin noting that local films command up to 76% of the box office in Japan, 61% in South Korea, and 89% in India. The studio has built several successful theatrical franchises, including Germany's "The Three Investigators" series and Spain's "Father is the Only One" remake.
Alongside SPIP's anime adaptation efforts, the Japan Society has announced that 'Cowboy Bebop' creator Shinichiro Watanabe and 'Star Wars: Visions' producer Justin Leach will headline the organization's upcoming Foreign Exchange Series. This event is set to take place on October 31st, 2025, as part of the Tokyo International Film Festival.
SPIP's focus on local-language and anime-to-live-action adaptations reflects a broader industry trend, with the studio citing recent successes like the record-breaking performance of "Demon Slayer" and the global $100 million opening of "Chainsaw Man." As the studio continues to build its slate, it remains committed to authentic local storytelling, with Askin emphasizing the importance of collaborating with regional partners to ensure cultural authenticity.
