Sony Pictures has acquired the North American and various international rights to the Thunder Road and Tango thriller "The Surgeon," starring Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh. The acquisition comes as the film garnered significant buzz at a recent film festival.
In the action-packed film, Yeoh plays a highly skilled surgeon who is kidnapped. She is forced to operate on an unknown patient, but uses her extensive medical knowledge to outwit her abductors in a fight for survival. The movie is directed by Roshan Sethi, who also co-created the Fox series "The Resident."
"The Surgeon" has received critical praise, holding a perfect 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on eleven reviews from its festival debut. The film's production team includes producers from the "John Wick" franchise.
Michelle Yeoh, who won an Oscar in 2023 for her role in "Everything Everywhere All at Once," also had another film selected at the same festival. The deal was negotiated by WME on behalf of the filmmakers.
