Fifty years after Satyajit Ray's "Sonar Kella" captivated audiences, a new literary tribute has emerged in Kolkata. Bhasha Publishing has released "Sonar Kella 2-in-1," a groundbreaking flipbook that transforms the classic film into a physical animation. This unique initiative was launched at the Read Bengali Bookstore by veteran actor Siddhartha Chatterjee, who first portrayed Topshe in Ray's film.
The "Sonar Kella 2-in-1" book is inspired by a scene in Ray's "Joi Baba Felunath," where Feluda is seen with a hand-drawn flipbook. Agniva Chakraborty compiled and edited this volume, collaborating with artist Shubham Bhattacharya, who designed the cover, illustrations, and animation mechanics. Readers can now witness the film's iconic moments unfold through finger flicks.
Beyond its animation feature, the book serves as a comprehensive factbook. It reveals production secrets and lesser-known trivia about Ray's 1974 masterpiece. Highlighting the 50th anniversary, it includes vibrant color photographs of the original Rajasthan shooting locations, showcasing their present-day appearance. A detailed bibliography of books from Feluda's personal bookshelf is also reproduced.
Each copy comes with premium replicas of Feluda and Dr. Hajra's visiting cards, faithful to Ray's original designs. Custom character cut-out bookmarks of the film's cast are also included. The book investigates behind-the-scenes realities, such as Feluda's camel-riding ability and clarifies that actor Kushal Chakraborty's debut was not "Sonar Kella."
