Bhatkhande Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya in Lucknow recently welcomed Padma Vibhushan Sonal Mansingh for an engaging discourse and dance workshop. The event, held on Monday, filled the hall with eager students and faculty members. Mansingh initiated the session with an Omkar chant, setting a reflective atmosphere for the attendees.
During her address, the esteemed Odissi exponent described learning as an unending voyage, encouraging students to embrace knowledge from all avenues. She invoked the principle of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,' asserting that art flourishes through practitioners' open-mindedness and inquisitive spirits. Mansingh recounted formative early experiences, including childhood music encounters in Mumbai that deeply influenced her understanding of creativity and movement.
She further elaborated on mentorship, portraying gurus as guides who illuminate a seeker's path rather than mere instructors. Highlighting the Natyashastra, Mansingh stressed that classical dance is intrinsically linked to life, reflecting societal, cultural, and spiritual dimensions. She advised students that talent must be fortified by consistent practice, discipline, sensitivity, and enduring dedication.
The second session featured student performances in Bharatanatyam and Kathak. Mansingh provided meticulous feedback, occasionally demonstrating movements to illustrate the essential harmony of gestures, gaze, thought, and emotion for impactful stage presence. She encouraged dancers to draw inspiration from daily life and lived experiences.
