The acclaimed SXSW short film, 'Son of a Bikram,' is set for a significant expansion into film and television. Marginal MediaWorks has officially partnered with the film's creators, Ash T and Johnny Rey Diaz, to develop the project further. This collaboration aims to continue the film's festival run while simultaneously working on a longer-form adaptation.
The narrative of 'Son of a Bikram' follows Raag, portrayed by Ash T, an office worker whose personal world is upended by unfolding allegations of sexual assault against his yoga guru, Bikram. Ash T, also a writer and former physician, brings notable acting experience from series like 'Better Call Saul' and 'Euphoria.' Diaz, a director and actor, has a strong background in film festivals and television, including a role on 'Primo.'
Marginal MediaWorks, established in 2019, focuses on incubating original intellectual property from outside the conventional Hollywood system, drawing comparisons to studios like A24. Founder and CEO Sanjay M. Sharma highlighted his company's philosophy of finding value in emerging talent and IP from the "margins." Sharma, who previously played a role in scaling early YouTube businesses like Machinima, believes traditional studios are slow to adapt to changing media landscapes and declining production costs, which empower creators to reach audiences independently.
