20 Mar
Summary
- Sofia Coppola's planned film with Kirsten Dunst was cancelled.
- The director found the film's tone too sad for current times.
- Dunst will now appear in a sequel to A Minecraft Movie.

Director Sofia Coppola has confirmed that a film project intended for Kirsten Dunst, with production eyed for 2026, will no longer move forward. Coppola cited the film's inherently sad tone as the reason for its cancellation, stating to Elle that it "felt too sad" and was not appropriate for "dark times." She expressed a desire to offer "hope and beauty" in her work rather than contributing to a sense of confusion. Dunst had previously described the project as a period piece set to shoot in the U.S.
Dunst's future projects now include a role in Warner Bros.' upcoming sequel to A Minecraft Movie. She had previously expressed interest in appearing in the franchise's second film, hoping to "make a movie where I don't lose money." Coppola's recent credits include the biopic Priscilla, and she is not yet attached to a new project, having previously developed a series for Apple TV+ that is no longer in the works.
