Hip-hop icon Slick Rick is set to receive a lifetime achievement award at the MOBO Awards on Thursday, recognizing his profound influence on the genre. Born in London and raised in the Bronx, Ricky Walters, known as Slick Rick, developed a distinctive smooth-talking storytelling style that has inspired countless artists. His lyrical content ranged from social commentary on deprivation and immigration to personal stories about respect and relationships.
His early life in the Bronx during the 1970s, a period of urban decay, coincided with the birth of hip-hop. Attending LaGuardia High School, he honed his rhyming skills, initially performing as part of the Kangol Crew. He gained wider recognition after being discovered by Doug E. Fresh, leading to the release of the seminal tracks "The Show" and "La-Di-Da-Di" in 1985. "La-Di-Da-Di" has since become the most sampled hip-hop song ever.
Slick Rick's solo career launched with the platinum-selling "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick," featuring impactful tracks like "Children's Story" and "Teenage Love." Despite significant success, his career was interrupted by a prison sentence for attempted murder, followed by later immigration issues that led to a 17-month detention. These experiences, however, fueled his creativity, as seen in his recent work like "We're Not Losing."
Now a naturalized US citizen, Slick Rick expresses gratitude for the upcoming award in his birthplace, viewing it as a new beginning. He continues to find fulfillment in music, emphasizing its power to enrich one's own life and the lives of others.
