Musician Robin Finck, a guitarist for Nine Inch Nails, has transitioned to game development, co-founding the indie studio Eyes Out. Their debut title, the psychedelic horror game Sleep Awake, represents nearly a decade of conceptual work and development, officially starting in 2020.
Set 300 years in the future on a desolate Earth, Sleep Awake places players in the role of Katja, navigating a city plagued by a phenomenon that makes sleep deadly. The game emphasizes an immersive soundscape, heavily influenced by Finck's musical background and explorations into the nature of dreams and sleep deprivation.
Inspired by a chance encounter at Burning Man and developed through intense improvisation and collaborative sessions, Finck aimed to marry his improvisational music with cohesive game mechanics. Sleep Awake is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with its soundtrack also released.
