The tragic murder of 16-year-old Skylar Neese is the subject of Hulu's upcoming docuseries, 'Friends Like These: The Murder of Skylar Neese.'
In the early hours of July 6, 2012, Neese left her Morgantown, West Virginia, home to meet friends Sheila Eddy and Rachel Shoaf. Surveillance footage showed her entering a car with Eddy and Shoaf. Tragically, she was dead by the end of that night.
The three friends had planned a late-night marijuana session. They drove to Wayne County, Pennsylvania, where Eddy and Shoaf brutally attacked Neese, stabbing her more than 50 times. Afterward, they initially denied involvement, claiming they had simply driven around before dropping Neese off near her home.
Detectives became suspicious due to online content suggesting tension between the friends. A video surfaced where Eddy ominously asked about preferred ways to die. Shoaf eventually confessed to the murder and led investigators to the crime scene. She reportedly told police that she and Eddy killed Neese because they disliked her.
Further evidence emerged when the FBI found Neese's DNA on bloodstains in the trunk of Eddy's car, linking her directly to the crime. Shoaf was sentenced to 30 years in prison with parole eligibility after 10 years; her parole request in 2023 was denied. Eddy received a life sentence for her role in the murder.
The docuseries promises to delve into the "tangled web of secrets, betrayal and identity" surrounding this case. It aims to immerse viewers in the emotional intensity of adolescence, exploring themes of friendship, trust, and loyalty in the digital age.
