Milcho Manchevski's new dark comedy, "Sister Brother Manhole Cover," is set to premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival. The film follows Malina and Viktor, siblings living precariously at the margins of Macedonian society. Their survival depends on petty theft, including bronze busts and manhole covers.
Their unpredictable journey leads them to a wealthy, elderly woman who is blind. Her contrasting nature of resilience and compassion forces the siblings to confront their own ethical boundaries and the true meaning of devotion. Manchevski describes his anti-heroes as individuals who refuse to be defined as victims.
The filmmaker expressed a desire to tell a story about profound love and acceptance, distinct from romantic or erotic love. This new work marks Manchevski's return to the Tokyo festival, where his previous film, "Kaymak," also premiered in competition. His earlier acclaimed film, "Before the Rain," won the Golden Lion at Venice and received an Academy Award nomination.
