The world's highest-ranking penguin, Major General Sir Nils Olav III, is becoming a father. His partner, Connie, laid an egg at Edinburgh Zoo on Friday, August 14, in a surprise event keepers had not anticipated until at least 2027. This is the first king penguin egg recorded at the zoo in 17 years.
Sir Nils, the mascot and colonel-in-chief of the Norwegian King's Guard, has a distinguished military career. He was promoted to major general on August 21, 2023. Connie, who arrived at the zoo in January, was quickly charmed by Sir Nils. The parents are now caring for the egg, which typically takes about 55 days to hatch, with parents keeping it warm on their feet.
Zoo staff are excited but will closely monitor Connie and Sir Nils, as they are inexperienced parents. While their instincts are strong, the hatching process still involves a long way to go. The public is invited to observe the pair from a distance as they protect their precious egg.
