Singer Reflects on Iconic Film Placement 20 Years Later

In 2006, the hit film "The Devil Wears Prada" featured KT Tunstall's song "Suddenly I See" from her 2004 debut album "Eye to the Telescope" in its opening credits. This unexpected placement turned the upbeat pop track into a top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Tunstall calls this a "universe shifter" moment, as the film's use of her entire song, unedited, was like a music video featuring stars Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. She says it was her "golden ticket to the rest of the world."

Now, as Tunstall prepares to celebrate the 20th anniversary of "Eye to the Telescope," she's hoping for lightning to strike twice. The upcoming sequel "The Devil Wears Prada 2" is in production, and Tunstall would love the chance to contribute another song, though the filmmakers have not yet reached out to her.

The 20th anniversary edition of "Eye to the Telescope" will include three new tracks, most notably the actual "Eye to the Telescope" title track that Tunstall had originally abandoned. She has now completed the song, bringing in collaborators to help craft a cohesive piece that connects to the album's original vision.

Tunstall reflects that while her initial "raw" vision for the album was tamed during post-production, the final product went on to sell extremely well. Two decades later, she still feels the album has a timeless quality that doesn't sound dated. As Tunstall continues to explore musical theater, the idea of creating a show around her own songs has "definitely crossed her mind."
