The Siena International Photo Awards (SIPA) has unveiled its 2026 competition winners, presenting a diverse array of impactful photographs from around the globe. These images were chosen by an international jury and cover 10 distinct categories, ranging from travel and nature to documentary and sports.
Among the recognized works is a poignant depiction of a security guard moved by a migrant family's distress during an ICE detention in New York on August 20, 2025. This image highlights the human toll of intensified deportation campaigns.
Other featured photographs include an Afghan girl's confined existence, a family resting amidst the ruins of their home after a fire in Dhaka, and a gelada primate in Ethiopia's highlands. The awards also celebrate nature's raw power, such as volcanic eruptions in Iceland, and delicate moments like children playing with kites in Bali.
Underwater photography captures the dynamic Sardine Run off South Africa's coast and the intricate mating rituals of mandarin fish. The competition also highlights human experiences, from life in Gaza amidst destruction to the courage of a self-taught volcanologist in Vanuatu and the vibrant traditions of street photography in Varanasi and Barcelona.
Further entries showcase the stark realities of conflict, such as a demonstration in Istanbul met with pepper spray, and the exhilarance of sports, including a jockey's triumphant salute and a para-athlete's javelin throw. The beauty of the natural world is represented through fireflies in forests, spiderlings in webs, and the unique adaptations of ancient trees.
The collection also features cultural events like the Notting Hill Carnival and traditional Romanian bear dances, as well as intimate portrayals of life in remote communities in South Sudan and the Arctic. The awards underscore the power of photography to document, inspire, and provoke thought on a global scale.
