A new middle-grade series titled "Shrub" is embarking on a journey to destigmatize loss and promote empathy. Created by Emmy-nominated writer Shane Portman, the series focuses on a character named Shrub who undertakes a cross-country road trip to Hollywood. This adventure serves as a narrative vehicle to explore the various ways grief can "take root" in individuals' lives.
The project has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund its collected edition, drawing contributions from acclaimed figures such as voiceover actor Yuri Lowenthal and writer David F. Walker. The series is inspired by Portman's personal experience with the loss of his father.
"Shrub" also incorporates "Letting Grief Take Root" essays, featuring reflections from authors and professionals who connect with the themes of loss. These include insights from grief doula Kat Primeau and licensed therapist Ariel Landrum, alongside an informational piece by clinical psychologist Dr. Drea Letamendi. The print edition will offer a study guide and a fold-out page in each book to deepen reader engagement with the story's emotional landscape.
