In a significant new solo exhibition in London, contemporary British artist David Shrigley will engage in a unique dialogue with renowned Dutch and Flemish old masters. The exhibition, slated to open at the Dulwich Picture Gallery from May 25 to September 5, 2027, marks Shrigley's first solo show in a UK public art museum since 2012.
This show will present a series of brand-new commissions by Shrigley, hung alongside original masterpieces from the 17th century. Artists featured include Jan Steen, Adriaen Brouwer, David Teniers the Younger, Adriaen van Ostade, Pieter Brueghel the Younger, and Rembrandt van Rijn, drawn from the gallery's significant collection and loans from other major UK institutions.
The exhibition aims to explore the comedic aspects of historic painting, highlighting how artists through different eras have employed humor to comment on everyday life, human behavior, and social interactions. It promises a playful juxtaposition of art created centuries apart, reminding viewers that great art can also be humorous and engaging.
The Dulwich Picture Gallery's 2027/28 program also includes retrospectives on pioneering French artist Jacqueline Marval and British Pakistani modernist Anwar Jalal Shemza, alongside new commissions by Sahara Longe and Caroline Walker, showcasing a diverse range of artistic contributions.
