Shetland's Up Helly Aa Elects First Female Junior Jarl

History was made this past week as Shetland's world-famous Up Helly Aa fire festival announced its first female junior jarl. Erin Harries, a 13-year-old, has been elected to lead the youth section of next year's celebrations in Lerwick. The Junior Up Helly Aa (JUHA) committee recognized Erin's selection as a "historic moment" for the long-standing festival. The youth component of the 145-year-old event was established in 1956, making this the first time a girl has held the prestigious role of Viking chief.

Erin Harries shared her surprise and delight, saying she is "still processing the news" and is "so excited" about her upcoming role. She is set to receive her official jarl suit on the day of the festival, January 26th. This pioneering appointment highlights a significant step forward for inclusivity within the traditional celebration.
