Sharon Stone is speaking out about the difficult end of her marriage to former San Francisco Chronicle editor Phil Bronstein and their subsequent custody battle. Stone alleges that Bronstein leveraged his prominent media position in San Francisco to influence the judge and secure primary custody of their son, Roan.

Stone recounted instances from their 2001 separation, including Bronstein allegedly arranging exploratory brain surgery without her consent during her recovery from a brain aneurysm and stroke. She also stated that Bronstein did not support her decision to undergo a double mastectomy, though the tumors found were benign.

In a 2023 interview, Stone mentioned losing custody after a judge criticized her for starring in "sex movies." News accounts, however, suggest the judge cited her tendency to "overreact" to their son's health issues and questioned her willingness to prioritize her son's needs over her career. Stone has expressed that losing custody was agonizing, leaving her unable to function.
