UTI Aids Writing: Sharon Horgan's "Youth" Finale Twist

Sharon Horgan, creator of "Youth," shared insights into the challenging writing and filming of the season finale. She opted for a bottle episode format set at a literary awards ceremony, which proved difficult to manage. A significant plot device emerged unexpectedly: a urinary tract infection for her character, Alex. Horgan found this element crucial for creating moments of quiet devastation amidst the event's chaos. The storyline also incorporated various professional and personal crises for Alex.

The finale featured several notable celebrity cameos. James Norton appeared as himself, gaining fame from a play written by a character played by Anne Reid. Horgan recruited Norton last-minute after a chance encounter. Damian Lewis also made a significant cameo, bookending the season with considerable star power.

Furthermore, Lena Headey, known for her role in "Game of Thrones," contributed to the series' writing. Headey joined the writers' room and co-wrote an episode, impressing Horgan with her unique writing style. Horgan expressed a desire to continue collaborating with Headey.

Regarding future seasons, Horgan confirmed she is beginning to conceptualize "Youth" season 2. While she has a collection of ideas, she has not yet developed substantial material. HBO has not officially renewed the dramedy, but Horgan designed it as a series, citing the workplace setting as conducive to ongoing stories. She noted that the season finale mirrors the pilot's ending, with Alex and her son watching videos together.
