A new film adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, 'Sense and Sensibility,' is slated for release on October 16. Focus Features will distribute the movie, which was originally scheduled for a September debut.
The story centers on Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles, respectively. Following their father's death and subsequent financial difficulties, the sisters are compelled to leave their family estate for a modest cottage. There, they navigate the complexities of romance, heartbreak, and an uncertain future.
The ensemble cast also features Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, George MacKay, and Fiona Shaw. Diana Reid penned the screenplay, adapting Austen's enduring novel. Producers include Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, India Flint, and Jo Wallett.
Director Georgia Oakley brings her distinct vision to the project, having previously directed the critically acclaimed 2022 film 'Blue Jean.' That drama, which explored a lesbian P.E. teacher's struggle with sexuality in 1980s Britain, earned Oakley the Best Debut Screenwriter award at the British Independent Film Awards.
In its new mid-October release slot, 'Sense and Sensibility' is positioned as a mature counter-programming option. It will contend with action-oriented films like Paramount's 'Street Fighter' and 20th Century's 'Whalefall,' and arrives shortly after Sony Pictures' 'The Social Reckoning.'
