Sefton Park's Palm House is commemorating a significant year, marking 130 years since its initial opening in 1896 and 25 years since its comprehensive renovation. The historic Grade II-listed glasshouse, a cherished landmark in Liverpool, will host a diverse programme of events throughout the year to celebrate these anniversaries.
The Palm House, originally gifted to Liverpool as an indoor garden, fell into disrepair before a community-led fundraising campaign led to its restoration. It triumphantly reopened in 2001, and has since continued to house over 70 plant species from around the globe, including original specimens.
To ensure its future, a new membership scheme has been introduced, encouraging public support through annual memberships, sponsorships, or donations. This initiative aims to fund the charitable trust responsible for maintaining the Palm House, nurturing its botanical collection, and keeping admission free for visitors.
Events planned for this anniversary year include educational talks, collaborations with local schools, summer evening openings, and a dedicated festival running from September 6 to October 5. A new cafe has also opened within the Palm House, enhancing the visitor experience. The venue's status as the only RHS Partner Garden in Liverpool is a recent achievement being celebrated.
