Sean Astin: Lotr Trilogy Paid Me Too Little

Sean Astin, who portrayed Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, recently shared that he had to sell his home due to the modest salary he received for his work. Despite the films achieving global phenomenon status and grossing $2.9 billion, Astin felt a significant disconnect between the attention he received and his actual earnings. He disclosed earning only $75,000 per movie, totaling about $250,000 for the entire trilogy.

Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins, previously echoed this sentiment, explaining that the production company New Line Cinema took a substantial financial risk by filming all three movies simultaneously. This approach meant the ensemble cast did not secure massive salaries, as their contracts were for the entire project rather than individual film negotiations. While this prevented lucrative individual deal-making, it cemented the actors' involvement in a project that would become a significant part of their lives.

Over two decades since the trilogy's release, Astin expressed that he is now financially comfortable. Looking ahead, the franchise is expanding with new projects such as Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis, and another installment being co-written by Stephen Colbert. Astin remains open to reprising his character, stating, "We'd all love to connect to those characters," and is prepared to negotiate for better pay in future endeavors.
