Scotlandpur Palace: Odisha's Royal Secret Unveiled

Scotlandpur Palace, constructed in 1932, is a significant historical landmark in Odisha, embodying the architectural grace of the British era and the grandeur of the Deb royal family. This two-story palace, spread across nearly 10 acres, has evolved into a key heritage site, safeguarding the legacy of the former Talcher princely state.

The unique name 'Scotlandpur' originates from the fond memories of Pramod Chandra Deb's travels to Scotland in the 1920s. Captivated by Scotland's scenic beauty, he chose a similar hilltop location for his residence, hence the name. This choice was further supported by British political agents who noted the resemblance to Scotland's climate and landscapes.

Inside the palace, visitors can find a rich collection of hundreds of antiquities, including wildlife trophies, paintings, rare photographs, and arms. Notable exhibits like a stuffed leopard and tiger head add to its allure. Despite the industrial town of Talcher facing air pollution, Scotlandpur retains better air quality due to its tree-covered surroundings.

The village of Scotlandpur comprises about 100 households with a population of nearly 1,000 and a small railway station. The palace has also been a filming location for the Odia movie 'Mamata Mage Mula.' The Deb royal family, adhering to agnatic primogeniture, saw Pramod Chandra Deb establish his separate residence at Scotlandpur. The titular king of Talcher, Raja Saheb Rajendra Chandra Deb Birabara Harichandan, passed away on April 21, 2025. The former state officially merged with India on January 1, 1948.
