Scorsese Embraces AI for Cinematic Innovation

Filmmaker Martin Scorsese has joined forces with AI firm Black Forest Labs as an advisor, signaling a new era of technological integration in cinema. Scorsese stated his intention to "push the bounds of creativity" and create "deeper and richer experiences for audiences."

Scorsese views AI as a natural evolution for the young medium of cinema, akin to his previous use of 3D and de-aging technology. He highlighted how generative AI can enhance communication with his creative team, enabling clearer visualization and more efficient development of cinematic ideas.

He demonstrated the firm's FLUX generative-AI model, using it for storyboarding and reflecting on the complex staging of iconic shots. Scorsese noted that such tools could expedite the process, thereby saving production time and alleviating stress on film crews.

This partnership positions Black Forest Labs, co-founded in 2024 in Freiburg, Germany, as a leader in AI for film. The collaboration was facilitated by investors including BroadLight Capital and Michael Ovitz.

Scorsese is not alone among Oscar winners in exploring AI. James Cameron sits on the board of Stability AI, while Peter Jackson has expressed openness to AI, comparing it to special effects. However, some directors, like Guillermo Del Toro, remain skeptical, criticizing the idea that art can be created solely through applications.

Scorsese's endorsement arrives as Hollywood increasingly adopts AI. The Tribeca Festival will feature the AI-generated docudrama "Dreams of Violets," and director Gareth Edwards plans to create a hybrid generative AI film. Scorsese himself reported that the AI tools improved his ability to convey his visual concepts during pre-production.
