Church Battles LAPD Over Shelly Miscavige Leak
17 Apr
Summary
- Church seeks documents about leak of 2013 missing persons report.
- Church alleges Remini filed report falsely for publicity.
- LAPD previously investigated and closed the report as unfounded.

The Church of Scientology is currently seeking to compel the Los Angeles Police Department to release information regarding an alleged leak of documents. Specifically, the Church wants the LAPD to identify the source behind the leak of a 2013 missing persons report that claimed Scientology leader David Miscavige's wife, Shelly, was missing.
Church attorneys have filed court documents requesting a judge to force the LAPD to immediately turn over relevant documents. They contend that LAPD Detective Kevin Becker, who submitted the initial report, was a personal friend of Leah Remini. The Church claims Remini filed the report knowing it was false, intending it as a publicity stunt.
Authorities from the LAPD reportedly confirmed Shelly was not missing and later closed the investigation as "unfounded." The Church alleges Remini continued to make false public claims about Shelly for personal gain. The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department also met with Shelly in 2017 and found her to be well. The Church believes the report was subsequently leaked to journalist Yashar Ali, who published it in 2023.
