Kristijonas Vildziunas's "Dice-Ching-O-Mat" makes its global debut in competition at the Warsaw Film Festival. The film, an international sales venture by Alief, delves into personal transformation and fractured familial relationships, a concept born from Vildziunas's own reflections during the 2020 pandemic. He shared that the global shutdown prompted him to realize he had prioritized his career over his family, leading to a loss of self and connection.
The narrative follows protagonist Vilis, portrayed by Dainius Gavenonis, who finds himself confined within a mysterious "Cube." This claustrophobic space serves as a tangible metaphor for his internal world, where an intercom voice guides him through a process of reclaiming his lost identity. Vilis must navigate this mental labyrinth to return to his real life and mend his relationships with his wife and adult children, whom he had emotionally neglected.
The title itself, "Dice-Ching-O-Mat," is a complex fusion: "Dice" signifies chance, "Ching" refers to the ancient Chinese divination text I Ching, and "o-Mat" denotes automation. Vildziunas opted for a visually dynamic approach, with each stage of Vilis's inner journey reflected in distinct cinematic styles, employing varied lenses, compositions, and color palettes. The production, led by Uljana Kim, faced significant challenges, notably the construction of the elaborate "Cube" set, which required the creation of two identical, complex units to facilitate efficient filming within a modest €1.5 million budget.
